PIG IRON TYPES & APPLICATIONS There are two types of pig iron: basic or steel making and foundry 1 basic Used as raw material (input) to produce steel as a scrap alternative. This is the cheapest and easiest type to produce since it requires a not very special iron ore. Average specifications are: Low Si = 1,50 % max. / meaning a higher productivity high P = 0,15 % max. / meaning a cheaper iron ore and a non specified charcoal high S = 0,05 % max. / ditto Free Mn = 1,00 % max / no worry about this element and no cost as well 2 Foundry Used as input to produce parts since the most sophisticated to the simplest as the so-called municipals (manholes, culverts etc) and counterweights. This type is divided in two sub types, grey and nodular. 2.1 Grey pig iron Usually has high silicon (1,50 2,00 % , 1,75 2,00 % , 2,00 2,25 % etc up to 3,25 3,50 %) The higher the Si the lower the productivity and as a consequence the most expensive to produce. It has also an specified interval of manganese (0,50 1,00 %, 0,30 0,90 % etc) meaning you have to add this element (higher cost) and to control its content during production. 2.2 Nodular pig iron Used as input to produce very special parts requirind a very special iron ore and sharcoal and a chemical treatment as well. It has usually low silicon but eventually it can be higt. The lower phosphorus, manganese and sulphur you reach the best nodular you produce. The biggest nodular volume worldwide is the so called triple five: Si 0,50 % max. P 0,05 % max. Mn 0,05 % max. C 3,50 4,50 % S 0,015 % max. or 0,02 % max. Depending on the market they can demand lower Mn e P as 0,02 % max., 0,025 % max., 0,03 % max. etc. It is also usual foundries to use a semi nodular. Exemple: Si 0,50 1,00 % P 0,08 % max. or 0,10 % max. Mn 0,08 % max. or 0,10 % max. C 3,50 4,50 % S 0,02 % max. Pig iron types composition (typical)
